How do flat screen displays work?

Flat screen displays fall into one of two categories: emissive or transmissive. They are further defined by the type of display technology they use:

  • LCD monitors (Liquid Crystal Display): Transmissive
  • Plasma display panels (PDP): Emissive
  • LED displays (Light Emitting Diode): Emissive
  • OLED displays (Organic Light Emitting Diode): Emissive
  • Matrix displays: Rockport Presentation offers a range of matrix display systems, incorporating active and passive display technology.

LCD monitors incorporate liquid crystals which cover the entire viewing area of the screen. The viewed image is created from a matrix of pixels, each of which incorporates a tiny liquid crystal. Light is generated from small lamps and passed through a polariser. By using transistors, red, green or blue light is allowed to pass through the liquid crystal to form a colour picture. The colour saturation and intensity is determined by the speed with which the light is allowed to pass through the LCD. This happens so quickly that the human eye does not detect it.

Plasma display panels are made up of many thousands of tiny pixels, which are held between two glass panels. The pixels comprise three further cells (or sub-pixels) of red, green and blue, each filled with neon or xenon gas. When a pixel is activated, the inert gas ionizes and takes on a plasma state, giving off ultra-violet rays. The ultra-violet rays excite phosphors, which in turn emit light. Plasma display panels have a very wide viewing angle and picture quality is good in ambient lighting conditions.

LED displays incorporate light emitting diodes. An LED is a semiconductor, just like a transistor, and when voltage is passed through an LED it emits light. Red, green and blue LEDs are placed together to form a 'pixel module'. Large numbers of these modules are arranged to form the viewing surface.
 
OLED displays function in the same way as LED displays, the only difference being their composition. An OLED comprises an emissive electroluminescent layer containing a polymer substance, which enables a film of organic compounds to be deposited in rows and columns to form a matrix of pixels.
